Bornholm and Christiansø

A week vacation on Bornholm with the family, and a short visit on Christiansø. Two really beatiful Danish islands with a relaxing atmosphere. Bornholm is a quite large island, which is also a holiday destination for many Danish, Swedish and German people. Christiansø is not too far away from Bornholm, inhabited by a small, self-supplying community (ca. 100 people). For the Danish part of my family it has been a tradition for many years to have a common holiday in a summerhouse in Dueodde.

It was for me the first time though, that I visited Christiansø. Back in 1684 the Danish King Christian V. decided to build a military harbour on Christiansø. Quite fast business and  social life was established around the small island. In 1863 the army returned the island to the public, and allowed former soldiers to settle down as fishermen to also ensure that the old infrastructures stay intact.

The old buildings are still in a good shape. Lovely and colorful. Visiting Christiansø is like traveling back in time. Even though it was built as a military structure, it is very cozy, and worth a stroll. There are no motorized vehicles on that island. People interested in history will find plenty to see. Others interested in fine, yet simple Danish food will also find a good time. There are plenty of possibilities for short walking tours, there's a playground and a place to swim in the sea (brrrr..... cold!).

Back on Bornholm we stayed close in Dueodde, at the very south end. There is a wide beach with clear, white sand.  The best way to get around is by bike. Definitely worth a try is Søren's Værtshus in Snogebæk, and the local beer brewery Bryghuset Svaneke, where they brew a delicious stout. There are also plenty of local arts boutiques, and specialty shops.

What I like best about Bornholm is the combination of easy going sight seing, being in the nature, and slight motion on the bike. That is a great environment for for a good time with the family. BBQs in the evening, walks on the beach, in the bright but mild Danish summer. Looking already forward to next summer :-).
