Diving in Sharm el Sheikh

Together with tree friends I went to Egypt on an unforgettable liveaboard diving trip. One week in the Red Sea, starting off Sharm el Sheikh.

The Red Sea is known as one of the most beautiful diving areas in the world. The well intact corals and the marine wildlife attract many divers. Sharm el Sheikh is a rather touristic city in between the Sinai desert and the Red Sea. The tourism made sure that there is a decent infrastructure for all sorts of water sports. The infrastructure we were looking for was a with Nitrox equipped boat to live on for a week, and which could take us to the different dive sites in around Sharm el Sheikh.

It was the British company Ocean College, that offered us a stay on Seagull, one of their boats for liveaboard diving trips.

We anticipated to take a proper sailing tour to go to the dive sites beyond reach for the daily dive tours from Sharm el Sheikh, so that we could escape the masses of other divers. But for several reasons we unfortunately had to spend three nights in the Sharm el Sheikh harbour, which kind of defeated the point of doing a liveaboard trip. But nevertheless, we did some great diving! And even though there were actually masses of other divers, the Red Sea has proven itself to be big enough, so that we easily could get passed each other.

We did some great wreck dives. Most impressing was Thistlegorm, a big ship transporting war supplies during the 2nd world war. Motorbikes, trucks, tanks, and even a train were still well preserved in and on the ship.

One naturalist dive wroth mentioning was at the Aquarium on the Jackson's Reef. It is in fairly shallow water. But when you get there it becomes instantly clear, why it is called Aquarium: There is just life everywhere. Sting rays, trigger fishes, morays, pipe fishes, octopuses, barracuda babies, and many more. All just swimming around there right in front of your nose! It is a paradise for fun-divers.

Our trip included dives in the following places:

  • Ras Katy
  • Small Crack Lagoon
  • Dunraven Wreck
  • Shark-Yolanda
  • Ras Ghoslani
  • Thistlegorm Wreck
  • Outside of Jackson Reef
  • Aquarium at Jackson Reef
  • South Lagoon
  • Jackson Reef
  • Thomas Reef
  • Gordon's Reef
  • Tempel
  • Shark-Yolanda & Anemon City
  • Jack Fish Alley
  • Ras Zatartest
